What inspires you?

Wind Music - 1997  Call for Inspiration

I’m asking you to jot down the things, ideas, people, and dreams that light your fire. This is a call for ideas. A request for quotes. A cry for truth.  A wish for hope.  Yes, it’s a fluffy request, but I’d like to know…

What inspires you?

  2. Here are 5 things that inspire me:

    1. Intelligent people that share their wealth of knowledge to help others succeed, such as: Jack Welch, Marshall Goldsmith, Tom Sant, Garr Reynolds and Bill George
    2. Great, thought provoking questions
    3. A bottle of 1977 Fonseca Port
    4. Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson
    5. Members of a social network, such as Twitter, who respond to a call for help and give freely of their time and attention.

  3. What inspires me is children’s laughter and the accomplishment of a task. I also get juiced by coaching employees to reach beyond their current skills to develop new ones.

Susan, you are right on with your Covey reference. We are working longer than ever, but are we really doing more? Thanks for the reminder to sharpen the saw!

  4. Wonderful inspirations, M. Fiorio, Alexis, and bchboy1.

How do you ensure that your life is filled with connection to these great ideas and experiences?

I am drawn back to Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey encourages us to find a way to reduce the inordinate amount of time we spend on the “not urgent; not important” things in life. He stresses the importance of focusing on what matters. (FOr a current discussion, see http://www.stephencovey.com/blog/?p=12.)

So, as we think about what matters, how do we increase the time we allow for being inspired?

  6. I am inspired by the idea of a solid instructional design product, such as a 30-minute e-learning that gives me practical tools I can use back at my desk.

Sadly, it’s been a while since I’ve seen one!

    Any good examples to share?

    Alexis.

  7. A good book inspires me. For example, I Know This Much Is True,” by Wally Lamb.

A good rain inspires me. Like when the creek rises and the streets glisten.

A good boss inspires me. Like when I miss the mark and she has the guts to coach me with both truth and encouragement.

    Thanks for asking.

  8. Three recent inspirations:

    1. Leaders with vision. For a stirring example, see an excerpt from Colin Powell’s, My American Journey.
    2. Regular people revealing their gifts. For a shining example, see Paul Potts perform Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.”
    3. Simple design that embraces white space. For a shining example from the world of photography, see Corbis.com.
